In high school 1981-1985 I hated Hello Kitty. I thought it stood for little rich girls to waste their money on shallow objects.
Now at the ripe age of 37 I simply love it!
Anyone else experience this phenomena?

Re: Anyone else here a late Bloomer for Hello Kitty?
Tue, February 22, 2005 - 8:07 PMRight on Lisa! Good for you! I have to admit that I became a fan in the past three years and I am glad I have come to the "other side". Maybe I am a happier person nowadays and that would account for being able to accept the kind of joy and fun that Hello Kitty products provide to me.

Re: Anyone else here a late Bloomer for Hello Kitty?
Wed, February 23, 2005 - 7:59 AMI still love hello Kitty at the ripe old age of 41, and I have loved/collected Hello Kitty since 1986. Back then, I felt my obsession was very "punk"

Re: Anyone else here a late Bloomer for Hello Kitty?
Wed, February 23, 2005 - 9:08 AMi remember what must've been the first wave in the US...around '77...there was a HK display in a department store i went to to buy a snoopy doll...
i think that was also the first year i met a japanese kid in school...she used to get in trouble for reading japanese books all the time.. -

Re: Anyone else here a late Bloomer for Hello Kitty?
Wed, February 23, 2005 - 12:36 PMomg, YES! i had exactly the same experience. same year ('77) in the girls' dept. of J. Byrons (crappy third rate department store of the recession mall in the south). i was drawn to the snoopy doll, and then stayed for the kitty, and we've been in love ever since.
i'm curious about you older converts - what drew you in as an adult? for me, i've always loved her, but part of her appeal now is nostalgic and retro. -

Wed, February 23, 2005 - 12:43 PMThe colors, Kitty's sweet face...I am not sure exactly what drew me to her. Maybe trying to reconnect to a part of my childhood I missed out on...

Re: Anyone else here a late Bloomer for Hello Kitty?
Wed, February 23, 2005 - 9:29 AMI bloomed late I guess, around the mid 90's. I'm 38 now, and male...which creates a very special problem around my male friends. I'm secure in my sexuality, so no big deal, but I do find it annoying that males my age aren't 'supposed' to be down with Hello Kitty, Badtz Maru, and my favorite...Chococat. What gives? I find people into anime, or almost anything Japanese are little more accepting, but I have recieved some pretty strange glances from friends who happen to see any Sanrio-related stuff at my place. I try not to hang out with narrow-minded idiots, but even the most even-tempered and open-minded people say "Hello Kitty???" as if they've just spotted a Strawberry Shortcake doll sitting on my bed or something. -

Re: Anyone else here a late Bloomer for Hello Kitty?
Wed, February 23, 2005 - 1:28 PMnope. I've always loved her. I still remember when I was 4 years old and my dad gave me my first umbrella, it was light pink with hello kitty and little houses and apple prints on it. I got my first diary in which I just drew pictures in a year later on trip to Atlanta. I'm in Colombia, and Hello Kitty stuff wasn't really available here when I was little, so, pretty much only spoiled little rich girls whose daddy's traveled outside of Colombia were the only ones with Hello Kitty stuff. I'm lucky I was one of them :-)
now there's sanrio stores here, too, which I LOVE! -

I have a pink my melody wallet right now :-) -

Re: Anyone else here a late Bloomer for Hello Kitty?
Wed, February 23, 2005 - 1:59 PMI got drawn in more and more. Of course, I explain it away as a fascination with the graphical power that Sanrio has harnessed.
But I don't think most people believe my hollow lies.... -

Re: Anyone else here a late Bloomer for Hello Kitty?
Tue, June 14, 2005 - 6:35 PMI got y'all beat. My sister was into Hello Kitty before me. One Christmas, I got her a bunch of Hello Kitty things, and got one for myself, I forget what it was. Now, at the divalicious age of 47, I've taken over as Head Hello Kitty Freak in the family.
